The problem is not the child, it is the category

Eleven and twelve are genuinely hard to buy for, and the reason is structural: the toy industry has largely stopped making things for this age, because most of the money above ten goes to games consoles, phones and clothes. What is left on the toy aisle is either aimed younger or is a collectible.

So the successful approach stops being “which toy” and becomes “which object”. Three categories still work reliably at this age: equipment that supports something they already do, games that get played when friends are over, and projects that produce a real output. Everything on this page is one of those three.

What the child is actually judging

At eleven, a present is partly a statement about how the giver sees them. A gift that reads as being for a younger child is not received as a bad toy, it is received as being misjudged, and that is worth more care than the specific item. This is the age to buy slightly up rather than slightly down.

It is also the age where asking is not a failure. A specific request from a twelve-year-old is a far better guide than any list, and if you cannot ask, cash or a gift card genuinely outperforms a guess. Our nephew and niece guide is written for people buying at exactly this distance.

What we would skip

Anything with an age range printed as “8-12” where the packaging is obviously aimed at the eight. Also skip the joke novelty gift — it is funny for one afternoon and then it is a thing in their room they did not choose. If you want funny, a card game does the job and gets used.

Toys we claim to have played with: 0

Every toy site tells you they tested forty toys with a focus group of real children. We have not played with any of these, and we say so. Here is what we do instead: we read the manufacturer’s own listing and print its published age grade word for word, we record the battery requirement and the assembly note where the maker publishes one and say plainly when it does not, we pull the price live from Amazon so it is never a number we remembered, and we name one thing on every list we would not buy.

The noise and mess ratings are our judgment from what the listing describes — not measurements. Almost no toy manufacturer publishes a decibel figure, which is itself worth knowing. The full method is published, including what disqualifies a toy.

Questions people actually ask

What do you buy an 11-year-old who is too old for toys?

Equipment, social games or a project with a real output. All three avoid the toy problem entirely: a scooter is transport, a card game is what happens when friends are over, and a tumbler or a chemistry set produces something that exists afterwards.

Is a 12-year-old too old for LEGO?

Not for Technic. The mechanical sets are graded 10+ and read as engineering rather than as a toy, which is the distinction that matters at this age. Plenty of adults build them.

What is a good gift for a 12-year-old girl or boy?

The same list — the split at this age is by interest, not gender. Pick from what they already do: outdoors, making, games with friends, or a specific hobby. Buying into an existing interest beats introducing a new one by a wide margin.

Are gift cards a cop-out for this age?

No. At eleven and twelve, taste is specific and the giver usually does not have enough information. A gift card gets spent on something used; a well-meant guess frequently does not.
