Seven is when attention span becomes a feature

The behavioral change that matters at seven is duration. A seven-year-old will start a build on Saturday, leave it out, and come back to it on Sunday — which is not something most six-year-olds do. That single change makes multi-session toys viable: larger construction sets, jigsaws over a thousand pieces, craft projects with a drying stage, chess.

The corresponding risk is buying something that requires more attention than a seven-year-old actually has on the day. The reliable test is whether the toy is enjoyable in an unfinished state. A build that is fun half-done gets finished; a build that is only fun when complete gets abandoned at 60%.

Card games are the best purchase of the year

At seven, a child can hold a hand of cards, keep a rule in mind and bluff badly.
