The age grade decides it

Mega Bloks First Builders are graded from one year; DUPLO from two. If you are buying for a child under two, that is the answer and the rest of this page is context. We never recommend a toy below its published age grade, and the difference between a 1+ and a 2+ grade on a construction set is a real small-parts judgment made by the manufacturer, not a marketing preference.

The compatibility argument

DUPLO studs connect to standard LEGO bricks, which means a collection started at two is still relevant at six when the child moves to standard bricks — the DUPLO becomes a base, or gets handed to a younger sibling while remaining part of the same system. Mega Bloks is a closed system with no onward path. For a household planning to build a collection over years, that is the strongest argument in DUPLO’s favor.

When the answer is neither

If the child is already three and shows no particular interest in bricks, skip both and buy magnetic tiles instead — they are easier to build with, and a three-year-old gets a standing structure faster. See the magnetic tile comparison.

And if the household already owns a large quantity of either, the answer is definitively neither: more of the same bricks is rarely what a plateaued builder needs. Unconnected wooden blocks are a genuinely harder problem, and cheaper.

Buying either one secondhand

Both systems survive being handed down; the bricks are effectively indestructible and both wash in a mesh bag. A large secondhand tub is one of the best-value purchases in this entire category, and the only checks worth doing are for recalled items and for any electronic element with a battery compartment.

Is DUPLO or Mega Bloks better for a 1-year-old?

Mega Bloks, because DUPLO is graded 2+ and we do not recommend below a published age grade. From two, DUPLO is the better system on almost every measure.

Does DUPLO work with regular LEGO?

Yes — DUPLO studs connect to standard LEGO bricks, so a collection started at two keeps its relevance when the child moves up around four. Mega Bloks has no onward path.

When should a child move from DUPLO to LEGO?

Standard LEGO is graded 4+ and most four-year-olds manage it. Keep the DUPLO rather than replacing it — it stays useful for younger siblings and as a base for larger builds.

Are Mega Bloks worth buying if we will get DUPLO later?
