Editorial policy
Nine rules, written down so they can be checked against the site rather than taken on trust. Several of them are enforced by the code, not by good intentions.
1. Nothing on this site is paid for
No brand has paid for a placement, a ranking, a mention or a link on Windup & Wonder. We do not accept sponsored posts, paid reviews, “gifted” products in exchange for coverage, or payment to be added to a list. There is no rate card because there is nothing to sell. If that ever changes, this page changes first and the change is dated.
2. No brand sees a page before it publishes
Manufacturers are not shown drafts, are not offered right of reply before publication, and are not consulted on rankings. If a brand writes to us with a factual correction after publication, we check it against the primary source and correct it if they are right — the same as we would for any reader.
3. Commission never sets the order
The site earns commission on purchases made through our links, which means an expensive pick earns more than a cheap one. The ranking on every page answers that page’s question and nothing else. The check anyone can run: look at how many of our top picks cost under twenty dollars, and read the pages that exist specifically to argue you need fewer toys rather than more expensive ones. 4. Every list names something to skip
Every product in the registry carries a mandatory “skip this if” line, and it has to be specific and genuinely disqualifying for some real buyer — not a soft non-objection dressed as a caveat. Every product carries at least two real drawbacks. Both rules are enforced when the site builds: a product missing either one fails the build rather than publishing.
This is the cheapest credibility signal available in this category and almost nobody uses it. A list where every item is excellent is not a list, it is a catalog.
5. We do not claim to have tested anything
No hands-on testing, no test lab, no owned units, no “in our testing” anywhere on the site. What we do instead — compile published manufacturer facts, apply a stated scoring rubric, and cite primary safety sources — is described in full on how we pick. Claiming otherwise would be a straightforward deception and it is the easiest claim in the world for a reader to falsify.
The same rule governs our structured data: the editorial scores you see on the page are never emitted to search engines as product ratings, because that would assert a review we did not perform.
6. We invent no credentials
The byline on this site is a real person described accurately: an enthusiast, not a specialist. No child development qualification, no pediatric review board, no “our expert panel,” no years-of-experience claim. Where a claim needs expertise behind it, we cite the body that has it — the CPSC, ASTM, the American Academy of Pediatrics — rather than implying we are one.
7. Safety facts come from primary sources, and age grades are never rounded down
Age grades are the manufacturer’s own published figures, read from live listings and stored as data rather than retyped. We never place a toy on a page for children younger than its published grade, and no editorial consideration outranks that. Safety context is cited from the regulation or standard itself, not from a secondary summary.
8. Prices are live or absent
Prices are read from Amazon daily and stamped with the date. Data older than 48 hours is not displayed at all — the page shows a “check price” link instead of a number. We never publish a price from memory, from a screenshot, or from a previous version of the page.
9. Corrections are made and dated
Every page shows when it was last updated. When we get something wrong we fix it, and the date moves. We do not silently edit a page to make a past claim look better. Corrections can be sent to info@windupandwonder.com or through the contact page, and factual corrections are acted on regardless of who sends them.
What to do if we break one of these
These rules are only worth something if someone checks them. If you find a page on this site that violates one — a pick with no honest drawback, a toy listed below its age grade, a claim of testing, a price with no date — write to us and say so. That is a bug report, and we treat it as one.
