What extra money buys in toys

In a few categories, price tracks quality closely. Anything with wheels, bearings or steering is the clearest case — a cheap scooter is a worse ride, and a child notices immediately. Anything that is sat on, climbed on or ridden needs to be well built. And construction systems that will be added to for years are worth buying in the version whose pieces still fit together in five years.

In most other categories, price mostly buys size. A bigger art set is not a better art set. A more expensive board game is not a better game. An electronic toy with more features has more ways to break. The what is actually worth the money page goes through this category by category.

The no-budget trap

With no budget, it is easy to buy a present for the moment it is opened. The problem is that the biggest box gets the biggest reaction and then often gets the least use. If you want the present to still matter in March, the best approach is the best version of the right thing, plus a small add-on — not the largest thing available.

Before you order something large

  • Measure the space, and ask the parents. At this size it is not spoiling the surprise.
  • Build flat-packed items before the day.
  • Buy the helmet, the sand, the batteries or the story cards in the same order.
  • Check the manufacturer’s age grade on the card.

Toys we claim to have played with: 0

Every toy site tells you they tested forty toys with a focus group of real children. We have not played with any of these, and we say so. Here is what we do instead: we read the manufacturer’s own listing and print its published age grade word for word, we record the battery requirement and the assembly note where the maker publishes one and say plainly when it does not, we pull the price live from Amazon so it is never a number we remembered, and we name one thing on every list we would not buy.

The noise and mess ratings are our judgment from what the listing describes — not measurements. Almost no toy manufacturer publishes a decibel figure, which is itself worth knowing. The full method is published, including what disqualifies a toy.

Questions people actually ask

What is the best expensive toy to buy a child?
The one where extra money buys real quality: a well-made scooter or balance bike, or a construction system that will be added to for years. Size alone is not a reason to spend more.
Are expensive toys better?
In categories with wheels, steering or structures a child sits on, usually yes. In art supplies, games and electronic toys, price mostly buys size or features rather than play.
What should I buy with a big budget for a toddler?
A balance bike from about eighteen months, or a sandbox with a lid for a family with a yard. Both are used for years and both are worth buying well.
Is it worth waiting for Black Friday on a big present?
Only if you are flexible. Toys have historically discounted as a category around Black Friday, but no one can reliably predict a single product’s price. See our Black Friday page.
