The three things that change at five

A five-year-old can hold a rule across a turn, balance on two wheels, and stick with a project long enough to finish it. Those three unlock board games, real wheeled equipment and craft projects respectively, and between them they cover most of what is worth buying at this age.

Where to spend and where not to

Spend on wheels. Cheap scooters have loose steering and wheels that seize, and a five-year-old feels the difference on the first ride — it is the clearest price-to-quality relationship in the whole toy category.

Do not spend on art materials. Quantity of paper matters more than quality of pens at five, and the expensive set is not used differently from the mid-priced one.

Buying for a school friend

Five is when parties get large and the guest list is a class list. At a $15–$25 price point, a card game, a craft kit or an art set works nearly every time. The one thing worth avoiding is anything requiring adult setup — the parents receiving it are already managing a room full of five-year-olds.

Here is what we do instead: we read the manufacturer’s own listing and print its published age grade word for word, we record the battery requirement and the assembly note where the maker publishes one and say plainly when it does not, we pull the price live from Amazon so it is never a number we remembered, and we name one thing on every list we would not buy.
