Buy for eighteen months, not for the photograph

A one-year-old opens a present, is briefly interested in the paper, and moves on. Nothing you buy will make the day itself better for them, and that is genuinely liberating: it means the only sensible criterion is what will be getting used in six months.

Everything on this page is chosen on that basis. The shape sorter that cannot be solved yet, the blocks that will be built with rather than knocked over, the sandbox that comes into its own next summer.

The duplication problem

First birthdays attract a large number of presents from a large number of people, and the overlap is severe — nearly every one-year-old receives multiple stacking toys and several soft books. Asking the parents what has already arrived is not a failure of imagination; it is the difference between a present that is used and a second stacker.

The age grade at one is a safety line

A toy graded 2+ or 3+ given to a one-year-old is not a slightly-too-hard present, it is a small-parts risk — and a birthday is a day with lots of new objects on the floor and less supervision than usual. Toys we claim to have played with: 0

Every toy site tells you they tested forty toys with a focus group of real children. We have not played with any of these, and we say so. Here is what we do instead: we read the manufacturer’s own listing and print its published age grade word for word, we record the battery requirement and the assembly note where the maker publishes one and say plainly when it does not, we pull the price live from Amazon so it is never a number we remembered, and we name one thing on every list we would not buy.

The noise and mess ratings are our judgment from what the listing describes — not measurements. Almost no toy manufacturer publishes a decibel figure, which is itself worth knowing. The full method is published, including what disqualifies a toy.

Questions people actually ask

What is a good first birthday present?
A shape sorter, big building blocks, or a wooden activity cube. All are graded from twelve months, none needs batteries, and all three are still in use at eighteen months.
How much should you spend on a 1st birthday gift?
Very little needs to be spent for a good outcome. The best-value item here costs about as much as a sandwich. Large presents at this age are usually for the adults.
What should you not buy a 1-year-old?
Anything graded 2+ or 3+, which is a small-parts risk rather than a difficulty problem. Also anything loud with no volume control, which tends to be quietly retired.
Do 1-year-olds care about birthday presents?
Not really — the paper is genuinely more interesting. Which frees you to buy for six months from now rather than for the day.
